Hello

I am taking methotrexate 15mg and wonder if there is anything I can do to improve the state of my hair! I dread combing it each morning.I have been taking the metho for nearly 2 years. I feel I can't be alone with this side effect.

Hi Claire - so sorry to hear that your hair is feeling the effect of the mtx - that must be very distressing. I too take mtx (20mg) but have only been on it a few months and haven't noticed any new hair problems so far. But I am 54 and my hair would be totally grey if I didn't get it coloured, and it's always been very fine and thin, so I have to be careful about what styles suit me.

I'm not sure how old you are - have you thought about a new style? Ask the hairdresser about what sort of products might help - they are knowledgeable about these sort of things. At least the mtx is starting to work for you so it's good that you're feeling better in yourself. Take care - Sylvia xx

My hairdresser told me that there are supplements to take which can improve and strengthen the hair.
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Hi Claire,

How much folic acid do you take? If you are only taking one each week ask your rheumy nurse if you can increase the dose, it might help with the hair loss.

That suggestion was no use then!BigGrin
Sorry, not much use there.
For the first couple of years I was on mtx my hair did get thinner but now it is back to how it was before mtx so maybe yours will settle down.

hi,oh i remember this one, i am on 25mg inj mtx and i had no problems on tabs apart from a headache after taking the things,i was on 1 folic a week but when i went on inj sadly my lovely long long hair started to thin just a little at the front,i spoke to the rhumy nurse and was put on 6 folic a week and i got my hair cut just incase i lost alot,my hair has got a bit brittle and not as shiney as it used to be so yes i would say mtx has an effect on hair but then any meds have side effects we dont always notice them,i am not bothered about it really but the cut i have is now very meg ryan ie;wash and go look and is still in good condition my hair now has a mind of its own and being short it has gone curly,it does grow back takes a bit of time mind,i now have a normall hair loss, good luck, dorothy
